Springfield Gardens is a neighborhood located in Queens, New York. This neighborhood is rich in history that dates back to its founding in the year 1660. Perhaps this community is most notable for the Rail Station that was aptly named “Springfield Station” and sat on what is now Merrick Blvd. Currently, this city is home to many immigrants from the Caribbean.
The historical Springfield Island Platform Station was opened in 1873. The New York and Rockaway Railroad gave the station this name, which was the name of a previous station located on the Atlantic Branch. Although the original location of this station was on Merrick Blvd., the station was relocated in May of 1885 to the southeast side of what was then known as Springfield Road. The road is now named Springfield Blvd. This area was comprised of mostly farm land until the mid-nineteenth century when the railway came in town and there was a residential boom which is another notable time in history for Springfield Gardens.
