There are a number of public and private schools in Springfield Gardens. Whether a child is in elementary, middle or high school, parents have a choice between public and private educational institutions. Many of these schools have achieved excellence ratings, based on the standardized test results.
In the high school category, the Springfield Gardens High School was closed in 2007 because of the large class sizes that led to insufficient supervision, increased drop-out rates and decreasing scores on standardized tests.
Four smaller, more specialized schools have taken over the building and offered students the opportunity to focus on areas that are of interest to them. Those include: Queens Preparatory Academy, Excelsior Preparatory, George Washington Carver High School and Preparatory Academy for Writers. The four smaller schools opened in hopes of keeping the problems away that are commonly seen with larger schools and larger class sizes. Each school tends to focus on certain areas, giving students who excel in areas the chance to focus more on things they may choose as a career.
